DEGLAMORIZING CIGARETTES. "Lips That Touch Cigarettes Shall Never Touch Mine"--my cigarettes, that is! Certainly, the very least annoyance the smoker has to contend with is being constantly bummed for a cigarette. In past issues of PP we have gone into detail enumerating the many disadvantages of smoking.

Obviously we take no small delight in the pronouncement against them by the US Surgeon General, and we are even more pleased to leam that the attack against the vile weed will be in the form of education rather than restrictive legislation which would only make the practice more prevalent than ever.

You may have noticed that in AMG pictures and films there is never any smoking unless we are especially attempting to depict a power-class individual. We consider it wicked to show a rugged, heroic type indulging in this asinine practice since young people are only too ready to identify and ape those they admire.

To be sure there are many times when it would be a great convenience in a film to show a fellow smoking, because just as in the true life situation, it would give him something to do with his hands, a simple activity to perform that would act as a time transition. But we will vigorously resist such a temptation, scratch our heads a little harder and find a more worthy action to fill in those little awkward spots in our films. We hope by the same token that many of our readers who really don't like to smoke but do so only to be "sophisticated" will give the matter a second thought and determine that they can find other ways to bridge those awkward pauses in social gatherings.
